In Higher Demand Everyday

Designing for Screen Viewers

The more that society has revolved around technology, the demand for screen friendly solutions has increased. Therefore in addition to being knowledgeable of designing for print reasons, designers also need to know how to generate screen friendly applications to meet demand.

As I have pointed out previously within this site, in designing an individual absolutely has to design with the intended used in mind. Designing for on-screen viewers is no exception. For example, In designing specifically for the screen the designer will utilize lower resolution settings to diminish file size and because high resolution is not necessary for on-screen viewing. In designing a Website the designer will save files in an optimized format to further decrease the file size.

Varied Applications of E-viewing

Web Banners

Surely by now most anyone and everyone knows a Web Banner when they see one, what may not be immediately considered is that even those annoying pop-up ads have a designer. In creating these a designer not only has to generate an effective design, but the design must also be as small in file size possible: lest the viewer have a slow internet connection. Web Banners are utilized for various things, coming in all shapes and sizes...sometimes a banner is an ad or sometimes its a message. Some are "clickable" links, some are animated, and some are not. I have included three varied web banners in reference to how different one web banner can be from another.

Rittenhouse Specialists Hypothetical Banner

This banner was created as one-third of a "campaign" project for a hypothetical Medical entity. The three pieces may be view together by clicking here.

Rapid Journeys Web Banner

This Banner is the third and final peice in a Hypothetical Advertising campaign for a "Outdoor Adventure Company." It was animated using Photoshop, to view the animation again refresh your browser.

Under Construction Banner Message

This is a downsized version of the "Site Under Construction" message: I utilize this banner when I am making changes to the Fingerprint Designs Studio site, by placing it above the page header. This animated banner was created utilizing Illustrator and Fireworks.

Websites

The ability to create website designs without assistance requires both skill as a graphic designer and the knowledge to function as web developer. There is a great deal more to web design than the average joe could possibily imagine. I designing within the business world, the responsibilities of Web Designer, Developer, and Content Accumulation are typically distributed to at least two people if not more. This site was designed from scratch, all of the images, buttons, and workability all have been my responsibility.

In designing a website an individual must first have an idea of it's function, target audience, and planned structure. Then the designer has to decide what to base their design on, the design my site for example originates with my Fingerprint Designs logo. After making the necessary decisions, the designer begins generating ideas and content. All of the images and extra things, like the current projects notebook, are designed in a program such as Illustrator. Once all the graphics that make up the website are completed, the designer puts on their "web developer hat" and figures out how to make it all work. This includes work in Hyper-Text Mark-up Language(HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and the utilization of a few Javascript (Java) forms. Once upon a time I would have never thought that so much went into enabling our web surfing.

Unfortunately aside from this site and the current page contents this aspect of my portfolio is a bit thin, as my earlier sites were victims of an unfortunate file transfer error, and learning web design involves more tutorial work than anything...it is my preference to only include my original work within this site.

Electronic Documents

In the push to "be green" where possible, along with the invention of the iPad and other tablets Interactive Electronic Documents have increased in demand and popularity exponentially. So of course the ability to create interactive documents is an important tool for a designer to have in their arsenal. My preference in creating such a document is probably the most common method utilized by designers, creation of the document itself within InDesign followed up by exporting to Adobe Acrobat. I have included an interactive document I completed as a part of Digital Print Production which maybe viewed by right clicking (or ctrl clicking of course for those on a Mac) here. Notice that there are both links and bookmarks the user can utilize for navigation according to their preference. Due to the dry aspect of the subject matter within the document please check back soon as I will be posting further examples of my understanding and ability in creating an interactive document.
